Barbara Gilhooly’s Play reflects her affection for both line and shape. As a printmaker with a background in drawing, Gilhooly often begins her paintings by carving into birch and other wooden surfaces. She then layers paints with brushes and cards, sanding, scrubbing, and further carving as she moves through the work.
Barbara also constructed wire drawings, orbs, and ‘dangles’ for Play that describe her intrigue with circles and wheels.
My compositions are intuitive, evolving from the act of doing, rather than planning. This is not to say that my work is completely spontaneous. Instead, I have come to trust that I can deliberately plunge into the work without fear, secure in the sense that each layer I create has meaning to the final product that emerges. Like so much of life, the layers that are covered over and may go unseen provide depth and substance to the beautiful surface.
